Diagnostic 4: Temporal Flatness

The mechanism

Temporal flatness is the grammar of inevitability. It renders time as a smooth, monotonic ascent — building upon breakthroughs, continuing our momentum, the ever-evolving landscape, the rapid advance of the field — in which each state follows naturally from the last and points naturally to the next. What this grammar cannot represent is exactly what real histories are made of: the failed versions, the abandoned directions, the lawsuits, the funding collapses, the pivots rebranded as plans, the moments when it could have gone otherwise.

The epistemic effect is double. Backwards, it erases contingency: the present appears as the only possible outcome, so the decisions that produced it (and the people who made them) become invisible — flatness is agency diffusion applied to history. Forwards, it manufactures momentum: if the past was a smooth ascent, the next step is not a proposal to be debated but a trajectory to be accommodated. "The inevitable march of progress" is never a description; it is a demand for surrender dressed as a forecast.

Detection in practice

• Flag the momentum lexicon: building upon, ever-evolving, rapidly advancing, the natural next step, inevitable, the march of progress, the future is here, continuing our journey.
• Apply the friction test: does the narrative contain a single failure, reversal, abandoned path, or surprise? A history with no friction has been flattened — real processes leave debris.
• Apply the fork test: does the text ever acknowledge that something could have gone, or could still go, another way? Absence of forks marks decisions recast as destiny.
• Check date density: flat narratives are typically undated ("in recent years", "as technology advanced") because specific dates invite specific questions about specific decisions.

Innocent uses (when the hit discharges)

Compressed transitional phrases are sometimes just economy: a methods paper "building on Smith (2024)" with a citation has supplied its receipt. The hit discharges when the lineage is specific, dated, and checkable — and when the document elsewhere shows its friction (a limitations section, a changelog with reversals, an honest postmortem). It confirms when the smoothness is load-bearing: when the narrative's persuasive force depends on no alternative ever having existed.

Worked example

“Building on years of breakthroughs in machine learning, we are entering a new era of intelligent computing. As the technology continues its rapid evolution, organisations must adapt to keep pace.”

Flat end to end: undated past ("years of breakthroughs" — which? including the two AI winters?), self-moving present (the technology "continues its evolution" with no developers, investors, or policy in sight), and a future converted into an adaptation deadline ("must adapt"). The unflattened version would name what was built, by whom, what failed along the way, and who is making the decisions the reader is being told to treat as weather. Note the chain: flat past → diffused present → foreclosed future, which is why this diagnostic pairs with both temporal lenses.

Relation to other instruments

Temporal flatness is the sentence-level signature of the gaps the Deep History lens (backwards) and the Future Modelling lens (forwards) detect at content level — the three together cover the full timeline of inevitability narratives. It is also the grammatical carrier of the Inheritance Thesis's central insight in reverse: where the thesis recovers the decades of decisions behind "AI", flatness is the device that buried them.
