Lens 5: Artistic Perception
What this lens looks for
Every communication trains its reader in how to attend, before and beneath whatever it says. A bullet-point summary trains scanning; a long-form narrative trains dwelling; a dashboard trains monitoring; an infinite feed trains grazing. The Artistic Perception lens — among the least obvious of the eight, and deliberately so — audits this layer: what forms of attention does this communication invite, which does it foreclose, and what becomes imperceptible to a reader formed by it?
The lens draws on the framework's media-ecology grounding: platforms shape perception. It extends the artist's question — not "what does this mean?" but "what does this do to the looking?" — to documents, interfaces, and AI outputs.
Why it is an architectural constraint
Epistemic flattening is usually discussed as a content problem (perspectives removed) but it is equally a form problem: when every input is re-rendered as the same tidy summary — same length, same register, same bullet rhythm — the form itself asserts that all knowledge is the same kind of thing, ingestible the same way. Ambiguity, duration, silence, and difficulty are not packaging; in many traditions they are how the knowledge works. A framework auditing what AI erases therefore needs a lens for the erasure of modes of attention — none of the other six catches it.
Characteristic gaps this lens detects
- Format monoculture — heterogeneous sources (a poem, a dataset, a testimony) homogenised into one output form, erasing what each form uniquely carried.
- Foreclosed dwelling — design that makes slow attention structurally impossible: auto-advancing, engagement-baited, summarised-by-default.
- Ambiguity intolerance — open questions resolved into confident answers because the form has no register for "unresolved"; the communication cannot say I don't know beautifully, so it doesn't say it at all.
- Aesthetic anaesthesia — friction-free smoothness that, by removing all resistance, removes the signals resistance carries (this is the perceptual face of the flattening problem).
- Sensory flattening — embodied, visual, oral, or performed knowledge rendered as if its textual residue were the whole of it.
When the lens binds
It binds strongly on interfaces, products, summaries-of-art, educational materials, and anything that re-mediates other forms (which is what AI systems do constitutively). It binds moderately on plain expository prose, where the question is whether the form is honest about what it cannot carry. This site applies the lens to itself in the colophon: a low-watt, single-column, unanimated design is itself a claim about what kind of attention this material deserves.
Scoring guidance
| Score | Indicates |
|---|---|
| 0–24 | One mode of attention enforced; ambiguity, duration, and form-specific meaning eliminated. |
| 25–49 | Dominant form acknowledged but unexamined; other modes referenced, not enabled. |
| 50–79 | Form chosen consciously and matched to material; space made for dwelling, ambiguity, the unresolved. |
| 80–100 | Multiple modes of attention genuinely available; re-mediated forms point back to their originals (cf. Principle 1). |
Worked micro-example
An AI tool that "summarises poems for busy readers" may be accurate line by line and score near zero here: the poem's mode of attention — the slowness, the sound, the productive difficulty — was the content, and the summary's form forecloses it. The preservative alternative links the poem, describes what kind of attending it asks for, and refuses to substitute for it.
