The mechanism

Epistemic inflation is the assertion of epistemic rank — best, first, newest, beyond-all-precedent — without the apparatus that would make the assertion checkable. "State-of-the-art" is, in its honest form, a precise claim: on benchmark B, under conditions C, as of date D, this system scores highest. Inflated, it sheds all three parameters and becomes pure status. "Unprecedented" honestly means we searched the precedents and found none; inflated, it means large. The mechanism is the detachment of evaluative vocabulary from evaluative method — the word keeps the authority the method earned, while the method quietly leaves the room.

The corrosive effect is cumulative and ecological, not local. Each inflated superlative is individually almost harmless; at scale, the vocabulary of measurement becomes the vocabulary of marketing, and readers lose the ability to distinguish a measured claim from an aspirational one — which is precisely the distinction an information ecosystem exists to maintain. Inflation also debases the honest currency: when everything is groundbreaking, the actual breakthrough has no word left for itself.

Detection in practice

Innocent uses (when the hit discharges)

The superlative discharges when its methodology travels with it: "unprecedented in the 40-year observational record", "state-of-the-art on MMLU as of March 2026 (see eval card)". It also discharges in clearly marked opinion ("the best film I saw this year"), where no measurement is implied. The diagnostic targets the borrowed-authority case: measurement language, no measurement.

Worked example

“Our revolutionary platform delivers unprecedented accuracy with state-of-the-art models, representing a paradigm shift in how organisations understand their data.”

Four inflations, zero parameters: no benchmark, no baseline, no date, no comparison set — and note the quiet agency diffusion in "how organisations understand". The deflated rewrite — "On the X benchmark our model scores N, an M-point improvement over our previous release; details in the evaluation card" — is shorter, checkable, and more persuasive to any reader the original should have wanted. Inflation is not even good marketing; it is the absence of the receipt.

Relation to other instruments

This diagnostic is the grammatical twin of the Scientific Evidence lens: the lens scores the missing methodology at content level, the diagnostic catches its lexical signature. The two corroborating each other — inflation hits plus an evidence score below 25 — is among the most decisive audit findings. Inflation also habitually travels with temporal flatness: "unprecedented breakthrough" erases both the comparison set and the history in five syllables.
