Direct lineage

CognioNews: Originated the “Preservative AI” terminology and the five principles / five refusals structure, developed in practice — in editorial work on AI and news framing — before being generalised here.
GoldBerry: Developed the 8-lens framework (as an ACST adaptation) and the Suffixscape diagnostics — the two instruments that turn the principles into a runnable method.
CognioPublic: Applied the methodology to public-interest auditing, demonstrating the practice on live communications and shaping the governance model's public-record requirements.

Intellectual ancestors

Six traditions the framework draws from but does not claim ownership of — listed here with their carriers, so readers can go to the sources rather than accept this site's summary of them (Principle 1 applies to us too):

CARE Principles (Carroll et al.): Indigenous data sovereignty: Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics. The governance conscience of the framework — knowledge about communities is governed by those communities. Lives most directly in the Indigenous Knowledge lens and Refusal 3.
Feminist AI Ethics (D'Ignazio, Klein, et al.): Standpoint theory and care ethics: marginal positions as instruments of detection, and data work as relational labour. Lives in Principle 4 and the Marginalised Voices lens.
Post-Colonial AI (Mohamed et al.): Decolonial critique of data extraction: the continuity between historical extraction and contemporary data practices. Lives in the Inheritance Thesis and the Cross-Cultural Wisdom lens.
Media Ecology (Postman, McLuhan): Grammar as power; platforms as perception; the medium doing epistemic work beneath the message. The entire warrant for Suffixscape and the Artistic Perception lens.
Critical Data Studies (Couldry, Mejias): Data colonialism and the extraction critique: the appropriation of human life through data as a continuation of colonial logics. Frames the diagnosis throughout.
Archival Theory (Derrida, Caswell): Selection as power; silence as data; the archive as a record of decisions about what was worth keeping. The oldest root: omission as signal is archival science's insight, applied to systems trained on the largest archive ever assembled.

On acknowledging honestly

Lineage sections are where frameworks routinely commit the sins this one audits: name-dropping traditions for authority (epistemic inflation by citation), or absorbing them without residue (flattening). The test this page sets itself: every ancestor listed should be traceable in the machinery — a named lens, principle, refusal, or diagnostic that would not exist without it. Where a tradition shaped the work and the machinery does not show it, that is a gap, and gaps are findings. Report them.
